Eating Healty Recipes

Published on Jun 23 2010, in the categories: healthy eating

Nothing compares to a home-cooked meal. We all like being served in fancy restaurants or missing dad’s lecture about today’s politicians, but somehow I bet the best meals you have ever had are family meals.

Family meals have their specific charm; your sister amuses you with a tale about her ex-boyfriend’s tattoos, your grandmother keeps asking you when you are planning on settling down, dad wants to know your opinion about the latest law enforcements and so on. But none of these compare to mum’s cooked meals. Ever since we are little, our mothers try to feed us properly and spoil us once in a while with our favorite cake or pie. I am sure that a certain taste, at a certain time in life has led you thinking to mum’s cooking.

Somehow they combine tasty with healthy and the result is magnificent.

Eating healthy recipes is something that you do while living with your parents and under your mother’s strict supervision. But I found out that eating healthy recipes is not so hard if you just put your mind to it and do a little research. Ask your mother’s help, of course, if you don’t think you can manage.

For example, let’s chose a healthy menu for a regular Sunday. You will have to eat a soup, the first course and the dessert. You can add something to drink to this menu, preferably also something that is good for your health: a glass of milk maybe, or if you prefer alcohol, a glass of red wine (doctor’s orders).Let’s start with the soup. We can try a vegetable soup. It is easy to cook and very healthy. You just need green beans, peeled and diced potatoes, peeled carrots, 2 tablespoons of garlic, black pepper, and salt, 2 teaspoons of fresh lemon juice and 4 tablespoons of olive oil. You just heat the oil, add the salt, the pepper and the garlic first and leave it for about 7-8 minutes.

Then add the carrots, the potatoes and the beans and let them cook until the vegetables are tender. Then add the lemon juice and you have yourself one hell of a soup. For the first course we can try roasted chicken breast with marmalade. If you are a meat lover, you won’t want to give up meat from your eating habits. So you can eat chicken, especially chicken breast which is very healthy and has little calories. The roasted chicken is done as we usually do it; we just add a homemade marmalade as a dressing and the result in amazing.

You must definitely try it sometimes .And as dessert, I would suggest a delicious fruit salad. It is both healthy and tasteful. Now, that wasn’t that hard was it? Eating healthy recipes is easy to figure out if you have mum’s help and a little bit of imagination!

One of the reasons for today’s major consumption of junk food is the lack of time. Junk food or fast food comes readily prepared, there’s no need to wait long hours in order to eat. You just pick it up and eat it on the way back to the office.

Women today are not only wives and mothers. They aim to accomplish their professional goals as well, and they have proven they can play all three parts. There is however very little time left for the old, classic home cooked meal.

They usually pick a large pizza on their way home, and that about all as far as dinner is concerned. But can we compromise somehow? Can eating healthy when you are busy really be done? Of course it can. You just need some tips on how to organize yourself so that you manage back to the office on time and put a healthy dinner on the table as well.

Go shopping for food during less crowded hours of the day. Just do it later than usual, in the evenings or even better during lunch hours if you think you can. You can’t go wrong with this method; there will be practically no one in the shop. And you have saved yourself some time and you have managed to be eating healthy when you are busy. That’s quite an achievement don’t you think?

If you get hungry while at the office and lunch hour seems million years away, eat a fruit, do not help yourself with the unhealthy potato chips or snacks again. Healthy Summer Eating

Published on Jun 21 2010, in the categories: healthy eating

Summer is finally and we are most happy about it. A period of sunny hot days, long entertaining nights with friends is just here and we could not be happier. The long hours spent at the gym have finally come to an end.

My friends and I do this every year. We are not very fond of working out, I must admit this, but however this is one thing that we have managed to stick to every year. We start going to the gym in January just to end up looking great when summer comes. We try to maintain our body weight and to be properly fit for our summer bikini days.

During summer maintaining one’s weight is quite easy. Healthy summer eating is quite easy actually considering the abundance of frits and vegetables. To be frank about it, during long, hot summer days I am not really in the mood for eating heavy, fat food. It is much to hot for anyone to eat I think, so unhealthy high-fat food is out of the question.

But what does healthy summer eating really means? Is there a diet plan we have to come up with or is everything easier than we have imagined? The answer is that we only have to follow some simple guidelines.

First of all drink a lot of water. It is very important to properly hydrate during summer when your body has a tendency to dehydrate. You can also add slices of lemon to your water. Staying hydrated will not be very hard because the body provides signals on its’ own. I for one drink a lot of water in the summer and not because I heard that this is the thing to do, but my body literally screams for water.

The abundance of fruits and vegetables offers us many options as far as healthy summer eating is concerned. We can eat a vegetable salad.

Besides its’ nutritive properties, it is also very tasty. I love tomatoes in my salad, they have a rich, refreshing taste. In the past years people used to eat hamburgers or hot dogs for outdoor walks or picnics. Nowadays, more and more people have begun to replace those fat, unhealthy junk foods with grilled fish or chicken. During hot summer days they represent a healthier meal to eat.

The best part about healthy summer eating is definitely the dessert. We can enjoy a variety of fruit based desserts which will make the perfect ending of a hot summer day meal. The variety of summer fruits will not only provide us with all the necessary vitamins we need in order to remain healthy and energetic, but they will also represent a delightful and refreshing meal during hot summer days.

So remember, it is easy to eat healthy during summer! Just drink a lot of water, eat fish, chicken and vegetables, and last but definitely not least, enjoy a fruit made dessert! This would be quite enough, don’t you think?

Everyone has heard of garlic. Famous mostly for its strong distinctive smell, it seams that this little plant has many uses. It is used for both medical and culinary purposes and its’ effects seem to perform wonders on both our food and our health. No one really knows where garlic came from.

It is thought only to have appeared in southwestern Asia but this is not a proven fact. Garlic is a species from the onion family called Alliaceae and it is related to the onion, leek and shallot. The most commonly used part of the garlic is the bulb.

Throughout history, garlic has been known to represent good but also evil, depending on the culture. I personally know garlic to be on the side of good. I mean, who does not know that garlic was used in order to chase away vampires, demons and other evil spirits? Is there a movie out there about vampires that does not feature a garlic involvement?

I do not think so. On the other hand, garlic was thought to be evil due to its’ curative abilities for people with infections. Infections usually left people with mental illnesses and delusions and thus it was though, that because they used garlic to cure infections, it must surely be connected with evil. I mean no God’s plant could cure such frightening diseases. However, although categorized as an evil plant, garlic was still used I order to cure infections.

Nowadays garlic is used for culinary purposes because of its’ savories taste but also for medical purposes I must admit that I have heard before that garlic is good for ones health but I never really knew its exact health benefits. So, let us find our right now: what are the health benefits of garlic?

Garlic is a powerful natural antibiotic and it is considered  a “wonder drug” because of its’ curative properties .If you crush the garlic, you will discover the following beneficial substances: allicin, phytoncide, minerals, vitamin B, fluorides, proteins and much more. Allicin is a powerfull antibiotic and phytoncide is an anti-fungal compound.

Garlic also has anti-oxidative effects, anti-tumor effects and anti-microbial effects.Allicin seems to be effective against 23 types of bacteria.Garlic was also used during the Worl War 1 in order to treat wounds.Today, garlic is also distributed to elderly people as a vitamin ntriet for the prevention of strokes. As you can see, garlic is actually a real health fountain and although many of you may not appreciate its’ taste and flavor, it is definitely something we should eat, if not on a daily basis, at least just once a week. Garlic may also have cancer-fighting abilities and can effectively reduce high levels of cholesterol. Eating Healthy While Living With Parents

Published on Jun 19 2010, in the categories: Eating plans

As teenagers all we dream about is living alone and getting as far away as possible from our parents. The time comes when we are on our own, when we escape parental supervision and we finally have to long envisioned freedom. There are however some aspects that we do not consider while fantasizing of escaping parental authority.

Can we maintain the same healthy eating habits and healthy life style like the ones we had under parental supervision? The answer is probably no. Between going to work, meeting with friends and maybe a date, when is there any time for cooking for example? We feed ourselves the dreadful junk food that our mother has been trying to keep from us while growing up. It is ok at first. But after months and months of unhealthy food, we find ourselves fantasizing about mum’s soup and her exquisite steak with steamed vegetables.

Eating healthy while living with parents is a fact and not a question. They carefully select what they feed us and they try to get us accustomed to a healthy eating habit and a healthy way of life. Family meals are very important for the proper development of a child.

They are comforting and provide both children and parents with the opportunity to catch up with everyone’s daily activity. You won’t even notice that you have an extra portion of vegetables because you’re too busy answering your dad’s questions about your school day, the evening you had with your friends or the new class mate who just moved in from San Francisco.

It is a demonstrated fact that children who participate in family meals eat a larger quantity of fruits and vegetables than those who eat alone and refuse to attend family meals. So, eating healthy while living with parents is something that happens many times without you even realizing it. Attending family meals is easy to impose on little children, but what happens when your child has become a teenager and he hates everybody, especially you, and he doesn’t feel like sharing his daily activities any more?

Don’t worry, you parents are smart people. You know how to convince your teenager son or daughter to participate in family meals, and thus enjoy a healthy meal. Parents usually allow the teenager to invite a friend over for dinner, they do not lecture their children during meals (maybe only after) and they try to get their attention focused on the preparation of the meal. It is very for parents to cook healthy foods.

I mean, after you have convinced your teenager to participate in the family meal, you should profit from the situation and feed him something really healthy. The family meals should include a lot of fruits, vegetables, low fat meat (preferably fish) , milk and healthy products. Replace unhealthy desserts with fruit yogurt, strawberry mousse, banana split or any other dessert fruit based.

Eating Salt And Your Health

Published on Jun 17 2010, in the categories: healthy eating

I must admit that I myself am a big salt fan. My grandmother simply goes crazy when I add salt to my food without even tasting it in advance. It’s just that I know her cooking habits. I’ve heard many times that eating salt and your health are two things that do not go very well together. So I decided to investigate. Is that really so? Is the excess of salt really bad for one’s health? And if so, what should we do? Should we eat tasteless food in order to preserve our health?

The difference lies in fact in the type of salt we eat. We do no eat natural salt, but refined salt. Let’s face it: we do not like the lumpy appearance of natural salt, we prefer the smooth Snow-White appearance of refined salt. Experts however say that natural salt is in fact a very healthful product that most people need. The effect salt has to our health also depends upon our metabolic type, on our high blood pressure and on the way we act if we are salt-sensitive.

The word salt actually draws its’ roots from the same roots as the word “ salary” .In ancient times, salt was considered to be so valuable that it was used for currency and appreciated likewise. Nowadays, no one knows that much about salt, except for the very important fact that it gives a special flavor to our food and many people are addicted to it. I for one admit it. Only in the recent years have doctors began to warn us about the negative effects that salt may have on our health.

Table salt, that is the salt we most frequently use, joins the enlarged category of junk food, actually being considered by health specialists, one of the most dangerous of them. Due to its’ various refining processes, table salt is almost pure sodium chloride. It lacks minerals and if mineral depletion was not bad enough, it often contains aluminum which is added as a flowing agent.

The most important mineral missing from refined salt is magnesium which has a relaxing influence on the heart. Magnesium is found in sea salt which is far better for daily consumption and does not affect blood pressure. That is why eating some sea salt every day would be highly recommended by any health specialist in order to supplement one’s supply of minerals. Many times people have argued that eating salt and your health are not connected because salt is not actually a live food, thus it cannot hurt or benefit your body. However, in the case of sea salt this is not true.

Thus it seems that the nice, smooth white salt we eat daily is in fact very dangerous for our health and in time it can have devastating effects. So, if given the choice, what would you do? Eat salty food and enjoy the moment or take a second and think about your health? I for one will think twice from now on.

Heart Healthy Recipes

Published on Jun 17 2010, in the categories: health

The recipe that will grant you a healthy heart is very simple and accessible to each and every one of us. First of all we should realize the fact that the heart is the most important organ in our body and is the engine that keeps us alive. There are a few elements that can influence the health state of your heart: blood pressure, cholesterol, smoking and obesity.

Keeping the blood pressure under control is one of the basics if you wish to have a healthy heart. Unfortunately, blood pressure can not be taken apart from the other dangers that threaten your heart, but it has been proved that it goes hand in hand with obesity, diabetes and many other diseases.

Keeping blood pressure under control helps the fight against the cardio vascular diseases, against heart stroke and many others. Nowadays, there a lot of ways in which we can take care of this aspect, like: reducing the content of salt from our daily menu and taking medication prescribed by the doctor, which will ease the stress on your blood vessels.

The cholesterol level directly influences the state of the arteries that carry the blood towards and from the hearth to the other organs. The heart is a muscle that is linked to a huge net made from arteries. In fact, the heart works like a pump that circulates the blood in the circulatory system. If the pipes (the arteries) get stuck, or have mud into them (this is the cholesterol, that thickens the blood vessels interior) the pump will have to work much harder in order to get the entire job done.

Smoking is another bad habit that will affect the health of your heart, and will destroy your body in many ways: the smoke of the cigarette contains nicotine which will eventually create dependence. The cigarettes also contain tar, which will affect your lungs and can even lead you to lung cancer and all sorts of modification at the levels of the lung cells, and carbon monoxide will affect the structure of your blood and that of the blood vessels. So I guess anyone can see that smoking is definitely not one of the recipes for having a healthy heart.

The good news regarding this aspect is that the modification suffered at the level of the cardiovascular system will soften and eventually disappear if you stop smoking.

Another important aspect is body weight. Obesity is the cause that leads to many other problems that will eventually hurt your heart. It determines high blood pressure, diabetes, the raising of the blood sugar level any many others. Studies have proved that any person that weights 30 percent more than he or she should weight is more likely to develop a heart disease than a person with a normal body weight.
